Next meeting: July 11

You may have noticed that Independence Day falls on the first Tuesday of July this year. We don't want to make you choose between celebrating our national holiday and enjoying the camaraderie and critiquing skills of fellow writers, so this month we will meet on the second Tuesday, July 11. Not our usual day, but our usual time and place (Here are the details of time and place). Hope we see you there!

And don't forget, there's still time to register online for the annual Catholic Writers Guild Live Conference, held this year in Schaumburg, Illinois, July 19-21 -- a  great opportunity to meet and learn from other Catholic writers from around the country.

If you want to make sure you never miss a meeting, contact Nancy Ward  to get on the email list. You can also sign up to receive all blog posts by email -- just fill in the form in the right-hand sidebar.

Twice-monthly meetings at the University of Dallas begin this Tuesday

The Fall schedule of DFW Catholic Writers meetings at the University of Dallas has been confirmed. This semester the group will meet twice a month, on the evenings of the first and third Tuesdays of the month.

That means that this Tuesday, September 20, from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m., any Catholic writer in the area is welcome and invited to gather with other writers to share, discuss, and critique works-in-progress. There are a number of eager young student novelists from the UD population who meet along with writers from the wider community, so there is always a lively discussion. Those who wish to get feedback on their writing should bring 6-8 copies of a sample of approximately 1,000 words or less.

Will you join us? Find details on the meeting time and place here.

If you want to make sure you never miss a meeting, contact Nancy Ward  to get on the email list. You can also sign up to receive all blog posts by email. Just fill in the form in the right-hand sidebar.

New Day for monthly lunchtime meetings

Please take note of a change in our monthly meeting schedule. Lunchtime meetings at Half Price Books in Dallas, previously held on the second Friday of the month, will be held henceforth on the second Tuesday of the month. The time will remain the same (11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.). This means the next midday meeting will be Tuesday,  11 February, at the flagship Half Price Books store on Northwest Highway in Dallas.

Our monthly evening meetings at the University of Dallas continue in the evenings of the fourth Tuesday of each month during the academic term, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Rm. 241 of Carpenter Hall. The next evening meeting at the University of Dallas will occur on Tuesday, 25 February. All interested Catholic writers (or aspiring writers) are invited to attend either meeting, or both. Please bring something to share about your writing -- goals, progress update, a short excerpt or blog post for critique.

See you there!

Tuesday evening meetings at UD to resume September 24

Welcome to the University of Dallas
Welcoming writers new freshmen
to the University of Dallas
After a summer break, on Tuesday, 24 September, we will resume our evening meetings at the University of Dallas (in Irving), from 7 to 9 p.m.,  Room 241 of Carpenter Hall (at the top of the east stairwell). Park in Lot A in front of Carpenter Hall (building 1 on this campus map).

Remember, if you have work that you would like to share, or would like to get feedback on, remember to bring 10-15 copies with you to the meeting. Also welcome are your progress reports (we want to know what you're working on) and questions (we are all here to help and learn from one another).

To avoid potential confusion, please note the following:
  • Tuesday evening meetings take place at the (Catholic) University of Dallas (UD -- not UTD), near where the Cowboys football stadium used to stand. 1845 East Northgate Drive, Irving, Texas 75062-4736.
Aw, shucks, just look at this map:

Got it? The only CATHOLIC university in the D/FW Metroplex. You can even take DART rail now, because there is a new University of Dallas rail station, on the Orange Line.

  •  Okay, now that we are straight on that, here's another thing: we will continue to have our second-Friday meetings at Half-Price Books in Dallas. Feel free to attend either or both. No extra charge (actually, no charge at all. Ever. Really. Just come). The next Friday meeting takes place this week.
  • To make sure you get meeting notices, you should get on our email list. Just contact us and give us your particulars. Don't worry, we won't spam you.
  • And another thing: If you, or someone you know, would like to participate but cannot attend either of the scheduled meetings, please let us know! We'll do what we can to accommodate those who truly wish to take part. We are currently working on arranging a meeting in the Tarrant County area. If you would be interested, or can suggest a good meeting place, guess what you should do? That's right! Let us know.

Our Next Meeting, Tuesday, 23 April

This Tuesday evening, April 23, the Dallas/Fort Worth Catholic Writers Group will meet at University of Dallas at 7 p.m. This will be our last meeting at UD until fall, so if you've been meaning to come, this would be a good day to do so. (Click here to find details on the meeting place.)

We may be able to arrange an alternative to the Irving meetings, however, to make the group accessible to members (or prospective members) in Tarrant County. Anyone interested in meeting in Arlington, on a Saturday or Sunday, should contact Lisa Nicholas (see sidebar for contact information). If we have a half-dozen people interested, we'll get something going!

(Updated) Our New Schedule of Meeting Times

schedule calendar Dallas Fort Worth Catholic writers group
Yesterday evening, the Dallas-Fort Worth Catholic Writers Group held our first evening meeting, on the campus of the University of Dallas in Irving. We were hoping this location would make the group more accessible to writers in the Tarrant County area, and apparently the strategy worked: one first-time attendee, and a repeat visit from a member who lives in Azle and has trouble attending our meetings in Dallas. Thanks to Bernadette Waterman-Ward for securing the meeting space for us at UD.

For the time being, we have settled on the following monthly schedule of meeting times. Anyone interested is welcome to attend any and all meetings, and please invite others who may be interested in the support, encouragement, and advice of other writers.
  • Second Friday of each month, we meet from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. in the community room at the Half-Price Books in Dallas on Northwest Highway. (The community room is at the back of the building on the west end.) Feel free to pick up lunch in the Black Forest Cafe (in the southeast corner of the Half-Price building) or something from home.
  • Third Fourth Tuesday of each month, we meet from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on the University of Dallas campus in Irving, Room 241 of Carpenter Hall (at the top of the east stairwell). Park in Lot A in front of Carpenter Hall (building 1 on this campus map).
In case of holidays or other schedule conflicts, we may adjust a given meeting time, so always check first, here on this web site or by contacting one of the organizers. You can subscribe to receive email notice of new posts on this blog by using the widget in the right sidebar. Contact us  to get email notifications.

Keep in mind that this meeting schedule has been devised to try to meet the needs of as many potential members as possible. If you, or someone you know, would like to participate but cannot attend either of the scheduled meetings, please let us know! We'll do what we can to accommodate those who truly wish to take part.
